Are you a Lilly girl?

The Palm on Park

The Palm on Park

Back in February while vacationing in Boca Grande with my husband.  I stopped into one of my favourite stores on the island, The Palm on Park.  A Lilly Pulitzer Via Shop, The Palm on Park has been one of my favourite stores since I started coming to the island in my teens.  Owned and operated by Jennifer Burch, a fourth generation islander, the shop can’t help but make you smile each time you walk through the doors and see those colourful prints.  I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Jennifer and store manager Kris Boyden to get their thoughts on being independent retailers and living the island life.

The store began in 1993 and started out in a small corner of neighbouring boutique Ariel (Jennifer owns both stores). Each year they would buy as much product as they could, and eventually decided that the Lilly brand needed to have their own dedicated space to grow and to thrive.  Jennifer and her incredibly close-knit team are now selling to fourth and fifth generation clients.  Asked to describe their clients, Kris only needed one word “fabulous.”  To them their clients are family.  While I was visiting with Kris, a client popped in her husband and dog to say hello and see when she was free to get together.  You would be hard pressed to find this type of interaction take place in other retailers, and is a testament to the amazing service that The Palm on Park team provide to each and every client. Lilly Pulitzer x Target

On April 19, 2015 the Lilly Pulitzer x Target collection will launch in Target stores across the United States and online. It’s collaborations like this that I wish Target Canada had succeeded.  The collection will include 250 pieces, ranging in price from $2 to $250.  In addition to ladies and kids apparel the Lilly line will include accessories, home decor and limited edition cosmetics from L’Oreal and Essie.

Here are some of my favourite pieces.  I’m especially in love with all the home items, and am praying that my friend in LA will let me ship a bunch of the items to her house!

Poor Little Rich Girl 2094 Yonge St, Toronto

Are you stuck figuring out what to wear to that upcoming spring or summer wedding?  Look no further than Poor Little Rich Girl.  Located in the heart of midtown Toronto, PLRG is my absolute favourite place to shop for an event.  If dresses aren’t your style they also have a great selection of casual wear from labels such as One Teaspoon, Dex, John and Jenn, Mink Pink and more.  I recently sat down with my good friend and owner Sara Puppi to discuss how she got her start in fashion, advice for other entrepreneurs and what’s next for PLRG. I had a chance to see this necklace in person this afternoon at the OOAKS15 show and fell in love. The necklace is designed and made by my friend Sofija of Standing O.  It marries the masculine and feminine elements perfectly and would be a perfect piece for spring.  Unfortunately the necklace had already sold out by the time I stopped by the booth!!  Luckily I was able to special order it.  I can’t wait for it to arrive and will send you some picks once it does.

One of a Kind Show Spring 2015

The One of a Kind Spring 2015 show wrapped up this evening, so before it ended I took the opportunity to head down and check out some of the great Canadian artisans.  I hadn’t been to the OOAK show in a number of years, but was so glad that I went.

The show showcases everything from body and skin care, candles, ceramics, food, fashion, jewelry and toys.  I’ve always been a fan of the fashion and jewelry artists , but this year I found some great pieces for the home. Continue reading

Spring Wish List – Stella Jean

I discovered Stella Jean last year, and have become quite the fan of her amazing tailoring, prints and design.  Born in Rome to Italian and Haitian parents,  Stella Jean designs have become a favourite among celebrities such as Rihanna and Fan Bing Bing.

Over the course of the season I’ll be sharing some of  my favourite pieces with you.  Hopefully you’ll enjoy them as much as I do!

It’s Official, My Cat is a Genius

I know that I said this blog is going to be dedicated to posting interesting stories from the front lines of retail, but I just had to share this video with you.

One afternoon I was sitting using my iPad when my cat, Bentley, became incredibly interested in the game I was playing.  This gave me the idea to see if he would be interested in playing his own video game.  So, I downloaded Friskies Cat Fishing 2.1 game and pressed play.

My only regret in discovering that my cat is a video game genius is the he won’t leave my iPad alone.  I barely pick it up before he’s all over me wanting to use it.  I think that I may have unwittingly created a monster!

New Balance, New Obsession

New Balance Precious Metals Collection

New Balance 574 Precious Metals Collection in Grey

These New Balance 574’s are far and away my favourite purchase from the last three weeks!!  I’d been debating getting these shoes for two months, and I’m so happy that I finally took the plunge.  Two of my best girlfriends own them in other colours and couldn’t stop talking about how comfortable they are.  I don’t know why I hesitated, but ever since I made my purchase I’ve been wearing them every chance I can get.  I’m lucky that the New Balance store on Yonge St. is in my neighbourhood.  However, if you can’t make it to Yonge St. you can purchase the shoes here.  For die-hard enthusiasts they are also available in charcoal, green, and purple.
